Most
of the year, Khorezm is a fruit and vegetable lover’s delight. During
the summer and autumn months, bazaar stalls groan with mounds of fresh
and tasty produce the envy of organic farmers world-wide. Tomatoes really
taste like tomatoes and apricots are soft and sweet. The long hot summers
ensure a lengthy growing season with early, middle and late harvests although
the current drought and ensuing water shortages are making domestic vegetable
growing increasingly difficult. The advent of greenhouses and imported
fruit such as mandarins, oranges and bananas have added to the availability
and variety of fruit and vegetables within this desert oasis although
during winter and early spring, fresh produce can be scant.
