'Puppets come in a variety of styles' |
Both Khiva and Bukhara boast a wide range of puppets for
sale. Whilst Bukhara has a greater selection, the puppets in Khiva are
usually dressed in Khorezm outfits and are cheaper. They are made from
papier mache and look as if they have been taken straight out of a nativity
play.
Puppets are available from most of the souvenir shops. They are produced
in the Feruz Khan Madrassah and also by Matiyopka who has a shop just
opposite the Zindan Jail. Along with puppets he also has a sideline in
silks and other antiques.
Puppetry is a long standing tradition in Khorezm and it is worth visiting
the puppet theater (left outside the Bakcha Darvasa) to see if there are
performances going on. They often involve life size puppets and require
no language abilities to enjoy the show.
